Painted Madame Dahlia
FUN IN THE GARDEN!
A truly interesting and unique dahlia! Rich yellow and bold red in almost a spray painted pattern cover the bloom. The blooms can grow 3-5” across. Each flower has a different pattern and amount of reds and yellows. We have been growing this variety for almost 6 years. While we adore every dahlia, we are continuing to work on breeding different varieties and are letting go of some colors.
Growing Tips
Plant in well drained soil. Dahlias do not like super wet soil
Plant horizontally about 4-6 inch deep
Space tubers about 12 in apart.
Must be planted in well draining soil that doesn’t hold water. Soil that hold water might cause the tubers to rot.
Once the stems start to appear and have 3 true sets of leaves, we recommend pinching the center stem to promote more blooms.
80-90 days to maturity/blooms. Dahlias need 120 days of warmer temperatures to bloom. They do best in areas where the heat is between 65-80 degrees. They do not love excessively high temperatures for long periods of time.
Annual flower and requires some work in the fall if your have cold, snowy, winters. The tubers need to be dug up each year and stored in a cool, dark place that isn’t overly dry to plant for the next year. The tubers the first year might be very small. See our FAQs for more dahlia tips.
Dahlias require some extra love. They can grow 4-5 ft tall so staking and corralling are recommended to keep the plants from breaking or falling down.
